Autumn Recap: Homiens, Gallery Highlights & Updates

Autumn Recap: Homiens, Gallery Highlights & Updates
Over the summer I took some photos of 15 Orient gallery, was showcased by Homiens, made some WebGL website updates, and more. Here’s a quick autumn* recap of what’s been happening.
*it doesn’t feel like it with this heat what is happening
Homiens Gallery
I’m fortunate to have been included as a prize winner and highly commended artist by Homiens. Homiens is a New York–based gallery and platform that recognizes emerging artists through juried selections and curated features. Saint Citrus was the chosen photographic work, and it makes me feel good that someone saw oranges and blue velvet and thought, “ok yeah I see it.” This one means a lot. Homiens said about the Saint Citrus photography:
“Grado’s cinematic, tactile forms yield rewarding conceptual insights.”
Website and Gallery Updates
After one year with this new website, I wanted to do some minor updates and one major one. The minor ones should hopefully be seamless and blend right in to make the site overall nicer.
The major update is a new way to view photographs with the grid layout. Narrative-based work will stay with a linear scroll and extra-large photos. The new grid makes it easier to see thematically connected images at a glance. You can choose between three sizes (small, medium, large). When you tap into a photo, it fills the screen, with the previous two photos overlapping behind it. My two favorite views are either getting three different photos to overlap or viewing the whole grid at S. Big thank you to Gaétan Pautler and Maël Ruffini for their help on this update. The Singles is the first series to have the new gallery view.

The contact page also got an update. It now hovers above the current page and uses WebGL to give a multi-plane / mirror effect.

L’appartement 49c on Dirty Static
In May I was fortunate enough to show Dirty Static at L’appartement 49c. Over the summer, they featured the work in their newsletter and shared a lovely note about the mixed-media showing:
“Earlier this year, Jonathan Grado shared a quiet, glitch-lit meditation on interference, memory, and the limits of legibility in Dirty Static Shows, part of our Fragments in Our Home exhibition...he reflects on the tactile act of printing and pairing images that resist clarity, yet still insist on being seen.”
15 Orient Gallery
Over the summer I was asked to take some photos of the Hudinilson Jr show at 15 Orient Gallery in New York. Owner Shelby Jackson was gracious enough to sit for a few portraits as well.

Fonts in Use
This website was featured on Fonts in Use for its use of Scto Grotesk A and Items typefaces by the foundry Schick Toikka. I love a good font, all my words are spelt with one.
Grado Labs at Canjam SoCal
A little different than visting distant relatives in Sicily, I lent a hand to my dad at Grado Labs’ showing at CanJam in Irvine, California. Grado hasn’t participated in many shows over the last three decades, but it’s always a nice time when we do. It was great to reconnect with longtime listeners and meet some new people too. I definitely missed that weather.

More projects are in the works, including ones with dioramas and lots of sand. For now though I’m grateful for the small moments that made up this past season. Can you imagine if I had to deal with big moments? I couldn’t.
